Have you ever had a major system break in your house and because you were home it turned into a “dodged a bullet” kind of ordeal?
The mysteriously broken water line!
We came home from work one day to discover a spray of water, that would rival Old Faithful, spewing out of the pipe that leads into our water heater! What? No one was home and hadn’t been home all day! Yup, the pipe sprung a leak, all by itself. Fortunately, the water heater was located in the garage so some of the water flowed into the street. However, the spray of water was strong enough it punctured a hole in the sheet rock, filling up space in the wall then drained into a closet in the master bedroom. Ugh! We spent the evening repairing the leak and sopping up the pond that had formed in our closet. In addition to the repairs to the wall, we had to replace the carpet in both the master closet and bedroom. Everything that was on the floor of the closet was ruined. Imagine if we had been out-of-town for a couple of weeks!
The fridge is on the fritz!
Our daughter and her family come home from a 2-week vacation to a stinky house. The refrigerator had gone out, apparently right after they left. The contents did not stay in the refrigerator after they melted. Ice cream, popsicles and whatever else was in the fridge had melted and leaked out onto the floor. It took months and tons of elbow grease to get the smell out of their home. Yuck!
Don’t risk it!
These are just a couple of stories of what happened to our family. We’ve had other leaks and breakages that could have turned in a major disaster had we not been home. That’s why it’s important to have someone check on your house while you’re away.
Crime Detour!
Criminals look for signs that no one is home, like newspapers sitting in your yard for several days, fliers and circulars piling up on your front porch. In beautiful Las Cruces, it’s not uncommon for a tumbleweed as big as a car to land on your porch. If it sits there for a few days the criminal element will pick up on the fact that you probably aren’t home.
